In September 2020 we began our most ambitious civil engineering project to date on behalf of O’Connor Utilities and Northern Powergrid. Unusually for us, this work was to take place directly on our doorstep, in our hometown of Scarborough. As part of Northern Powergrid’s £1 million investment program to improve the reliability and resilience of the networking serving the town, we were tasked in helping to replace 7km of high voltage electricity cables dating back to the 1960's.
The route of the project would involve working on some of the towns busiest traffic routes, including sections of Salisbury Street, Seamer Road, Oak Road, Falsgrave Road, Mount Park Road, Cambridge Place, Valley Road, Londesborough Road, All Saints Road, Westover Road, Belgrave Terrace, Westwood, Westbourne Grove, Princess Royal Terrace, Princess Royal Park, Fulford Road and Filey Road.
The pressure was on to maintain our usual high standard of work and ensure expectations were met by the clients and our fellow Scarborians.
Over the course of 9 months, we are delighted to say these expectations were met, despite various operational obstacles, not least a global pandemic. We were proud to work on and complete this for Scarborough. This is a credit to the operatives that worked on the scheme and all the staff here at Murphy Utilities, without whose support this could not have been achieved. With thanks to our partners, O’Connor Utilities and Northern Powergrid for allowing this content to be shared and the important part they both played in completing the works.
Murphy Utilities management of traffic through Scarborough during these works was excellent. Minimising disruption to local residents and visitors by effective management was key to a great relationship with all concerned, particularly the North Yorkshire County Council and the local councillors, and was also a contributing factor in completing the work ahead of schedule. The quality of the teams on site and the workmanship are testament to the fact that, despite the work lasting for eleven months, not a single complaint was received.
